Nintendo DS A Bigger Seller Than Game Boy

:astig:

Nintendo has sold more than 84 million Nintendo DS consoles worldwide, making the touchscreen, portable games console more popular than its iconic Game Boy handheld. More than 81 million Game Boys were sold globally in its heyday. The gadget, which featured a small black-and-white screen, is best remembered for launching games such as Tetris and Pokemon. The Nintendo DS has been credited with bringing a new audience to gaming, and has proved especially popular with women and younsters. Nintendo announced that more than 454 million games have been sold for the Nintendo DS, and that Nintendogs, a game in which players look after a virtual canine, had sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

No Further Content Approval For The PS2

:galit:It was once mandatory that game developers check with Sony on there games content in Europe. Now, when speaking at the Casual Connect conference in Kiev, SCEE’s George Bain confirmed that PS2 would now be “effectively an open platform” in Europe. This is thought to be an attempt to encourage regional developers in countries such as India and Russia to make “low-development cost titles and release them in their market”. EA Points Out The Problems At Nokia N-Gage Summit

:woooh:EA is none too happy with Nokia's N-Gage gaming platform. Peter Parmenter, Director Worldwide OEM, and Chris Gibbs, Executive Producer from EA, took to the stage today at Nokia's N-Gage Summit in a keynote speech designed to point out some of the system's flaws, and they didn't pull any punches.Whilst Permenter began positively - suggesting that gaming as a whole overtook music revenue in 2007 - he was quick to correct himself; adding that he believes "games are not the new music". Things seemed to go steadily downhill from then on for the Finnish phone maker, as the two EA bigwigs barraged the N-Gage platform. ( www.t3.com )

HD Netflix Streaming Comes To Xbox 360 First

:woooh:It's something you can't get on the Roku. Nor on LG's BD300. Nor on Samsung's P2500 / P2550 Blu-ray players. Nor through Netflix's own "Watch Instantly" portal. It's high-def Netflix streaming, and it's coming first to Microsoft's Xbox 360. Yes friends, when the all new dashboard hits on November 19th, with it will come HD Netflix streaming for Xbox Live Gold members. You should know that this is only a "soft launch" with about 300 titles available for now, and the litany of details you're surely craving simply aren't available at present time. At any rate, we'd say things just got a lot more interesting in the world of digital downloads, but there's really no need. The real question is: when will everyone else follow suit, and how quickly can we expect current Netflix streamers to get the HD upgrade? ( www.engadgethd.com )

Is Mirasol The Future Of Handheld Gaming?

:siga:

Silicon Valley based company Qualcomm has developed a display for use in portable music players that is completely visible in full sunlight. In fact, the color display actually performs better in the direct sun, because it uses reflected rays to amplify colors. Termed the “Mirasol” screen, this technology is hailed as the first reflective Interferometric Modulation (IMOD ) color display, and might soon be found in a variety of portable applications, including gaming systems. Mirasol quite literally means “Look… Sun!” in Spanish. Interferometric screens, sometimes also referred to as E-Paper, use the passage of light wavelengths through different layers of the screen to produce an image. ( www.pspworld.com )

Sega Japan Passing On PS2 Sonic Unleashed

:siga:In North America and Europe Sonic Unleashed is exploding on every viable console on the market with a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 version that Japan isn’t getting. Sega of Japan plans to release Sonic: World Adventure (renamed to better fit Sonic’s journey around the Earth and downplay the Werehog thing?) only on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The PlayStation 2 port will be completed before Sonic: World Adventure launches in Japan so this begs the question why is Sega passing on it? It’s not like Sega Japan is abandoning the PlayStation 2 entirely. Thunderforce VI comes out on Thursday in Japan and unless Sega has anything secretly planned it will be the final PlayStation 2 game published by Sega in the region.

Want To Keep Playing Hellgate: London?

:woooh:Sadly, with the collapse of Flagship Studios earlier this year, this also means that they have no money to continue running the servers for Hellgate: London. Another company has stepped up to the plate (albeit temporarily) to keep the servers running in the interim - but this is only short lived. Indeed, on the 31st of January next year, the official servers for the game will be taken offline. Sure, you'll still be able to play in single player mode, but we all know that the real meat of the game resides firmly in the interwebs. ( www.atomicmpc.com.au )

Are Ads In Video Games Pushing The Limit?

:ahaha:For those of you gamers out there who have a good eye for detail, you'll notice something a little different about your Xbox Live gaming experience through October – Political Advertisements. Is the gaming world supposed to feel enlightened or outraged by these new ads? On one hand it's always a good thing to keep an open mind and not shelter yourself, especially when it comes to one of the most important decisions for our country's future. On the other hand, how far is the long and bothersome reach of advertising in general going to go? To the players, video games are a safe haven, a way of shutting off all the distractions around us and taking a break in some of our favorite worlds." ( gametopius.com )

The Trouble Of Multiplayer

:inis:You’ve probably encountered them, whether in shops, on trains, or perhaps burgling your kitchen. Other people are everywhere, like some sort of uncontrolled disease. Recognisable by their not being you, with their different faces and opinions, they’re exactly the sort of thing that‘s wrong with society. History books show there has never been a war that wasn’t caused or exacerbated by the involvement of other people, and while anecdotal, I’ve yet to get into an argument which didn’t involve at least one other person. And they’re ruining my videogames.

Chinese Money Laundering / Gold Farming Ringleaders busted in Korea - Smuggled $38 Million to China in 18 months

:galit:Korean police busted the leaders a money laundering group for a Chinese Gold Farming ring (the relationship between the two groups is unclear) which targeted Korean online games. The group smuggled $38 Million over 18 months (!) from Korea to China (I think this is what they were prosecuted for - they made false purchases to a Hong Kong paper company to expatriate / launder their funds). Apparently the organization had a pool of IP addresses that made the gold farming group appear to be located at a Korean internet cafe.
The money launderers took a modest 3 to 5 percent commission (which seems pretty low... I think this would imply that they are involved in the gold farming business as well as money laundering). Charges were also filed against 11 Korean citizens who provided bank accounts to help move the money. ( www.playnoevil.com )

How We Interact With Our Games

:hi:Graham Bennett : There are a couple of factors of fundamental gameplay elements that can really make or break a game, like NPC pathing, the camera, or the controls. Of these key components, one of the first things a player will notice is the graphical interface. And, seeing as it’s the primary way the player receives information regarding their character’s status, the quality of an interface can elevate a game from mediocrity to greatness or it can easily break an otherwise positive experience. WoW Yearly Expansion Possible But Unlikely

:astig:Speaking to IncGamers at BlizzCon, Blizzard Co-Founder Mike Morhaime said that although Blizzard would like to be able to release one expansion for WoW a year, and that's still the aim, it's unlikely to happen. As we all know, Blizzard will not release a game until it is ready, no matter what. They had no problem with missing a Christmas release for the Burning Crusade, and the same goes for their previous claim of releasing one expansion per year. So we shouldn't expect the next expansion until 2010 then?

"The next one? I think it is still unlikely that we're going to get it down to a calendar year. We're going to continue to try and decrease that, but really the content of the expansion is more important." However, we can probably expect to find out what the next expansion will be at next year's BlizzCon. ( www.worldofwar.net )
