Video Games Can Save People

:bringiton:

The latest academic research has found that games such as Half Life and Doom could actually be used to train people in fire safety, evacuation procedures and even save lives. Missing a link? Let us explain. By using the engines from games such as these, which involve looking at a scenario from a first-person perspective, the team at the university was able to adapt the environment into a 3D model of a real world building. In just three weeks a single developer was able to programme three fire evacuation procedures complete with smoke and fire which the Durham experts say is significantly quicker and more cost effective than beginning from scratch. The scientists found three main advantages of using this technology. That it can be used to identify problems with the layout of the building, that it can help familiarise people with evacuation procedures and that it can teach good fire safety. Many dangerous situations occur in a fire because people don't know the bits of the building they don't use on a daily basis, like the fire exits and stairwells, well enough and therefore panic due to the unfamiliarity with procedure.

As opposed to starting from scratch this method takes a huge wedge of time off building a virtual reality model. The games are also tested extensively before use in both usability and performance also meaning less work for the team. According to the boffins the code within these games also enables easy programming of features such as wind, smoke, fire and water. Lead author Dr Shamus Smith from Durham University's Computer Science department said, "Although virtual environment toolkits are available, they usually only provide a subset of the tools needed to build complete virtual worlds." Dr Smith explains further that in order to include features such as fire and water the programmer usually requires additional programming skills and a substantial time investment on the part of the developer. "By using readily available computer games, these features can be very easily simulated and are obviously vital in creating a virtual fire evacuation scenario".

Steve Wharton, of Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service agreed that, "Using virtual models such as this one is an excellent way to raise fire safety awareness and test the effectiveness of a building's design. Virtual models also provide an effective way to train fire-fighters in a realistic, yet safe, environment." Further to the theoretic usefulness of this simulation, the team tested it on real people, showing them the difference between the usual simulation and the computer game-based one, those tested agreed unamimously that the latter was the most helpful and realistic, and that they really enjoyed shooting the fire demons in the ladies' loo on level six. Starcraft University Course

:ahaha:The name Starcraft is synonymous with the typical RTS, a name that will burn brightly in the nerdy hearts of gamers and strategists for untold years to come. The very last place you’d expect it to be uttered is the title of a university course, specifically, Berkeley. Held every Thursday at 7pm the lectures cover the strategy of the game, unit makeup and use, how to analyse a replay and many more. We grabbed the course description from their site, just to see what they were really on about:

"UC Berkeley students with an interest in real-time strategy games and the competitive gaming landscape are encouraged to participate in this class.
This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game Starcraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted. Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced Starcraft theory.
Class will start with lecture and usually include a special discussion topic having to do with the day’s lecture to inspire new and original thought. At the end of lecture, there may be time to analyze student-submitted replays to illustrate a point or to improve analysis. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class and is due at the beginning of each lecture."

Not only do they do all that, but their mark depends 40% on a final project, 20% on attendance, and 40% on replay submissions and homework. Their homework is actually just to play the game using the strategies covered in class! They’ve also got actual questions to answer for homework, just a few examples follow:

•"List possible uses for a Terran Barracks."
•"What is the advantage and drawback of selecting two High Templars and casting overlapping Psionic Storms?"
•"Is it more advantageous to attack in a line or to envelop your opponent’s army? Prove your point using flux calculations."

PC Game Industry Rocks, AMD Says

:woooh:Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced that the PC gaming industry is "blooming," following the industry's positive reception of the company's ATI Radeon HD 4800 graphic card series. Randy Ho, AMD's channels sales manager of the graphics and chipset business in ASEAN, said AMD has sold around two million units of the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series recently, and that the momentum continues with a growing list of high-performance gaming systems announced by their partner OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), including Acer, Fujitsu Siemens, Gateway, HP, and Medion. Ho added that Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Velocity Micro, Maingear, CyberPower, iBuyPower, Commodore Gaming, ExtremePC, Biohazard, Puget Systems and other system integrators have also announced systems shipping with ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics. The executive said a lot of their company's partner OEMs and system integrators (SIs) are now delivering immersive game play with the use of the ATI Radeon HD 4800 line of graphics cards. He said the card series is available in numerous configurations, including systems based on AMD Phenom X3 and AMD Phenom X4 processors, as well as Intel Core i7 and Core 2 processors. Has The Xbox Killed The Desktop Gaming PC?

:siga:

The all-knowing man on the internet who loudly proclaims that it's game over for the PC doesn't, it transpires, know much at all. Not only is there this sad tendency to declare the PC the Latin of games platforms, but there's also a constant hunt for a smoking gun. Is it Microsoft abandoning it in favour of its own Xbox? Is it piracy? Is it complexity and cost? The key mistake is the confusion of 'change' with 'death'. It seems outlandish to accuse an industry that was worth $10.7billion in 2007 (according to a recent study by the vague-of-purpose PC Gaming Alliance) of being in anything less than rude health. Another report, from research firm John Peddie, suggests that the hardware market is in even better shape than the software market: "From Q3 2005 till Q3 2008, 196 million gaming PCs shipped, and 10 million of them were in the Mainstream Enthusiast class—and if we include mainstream desktop and high-end notebook, we could add another 187 million units—now that really is a lot." World of Warcraft To Blame For College Dropouts Says FCC

:sobrakana:Do you want to know why your teenager is dropping out of college? According to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), it apparently has nothing to do with the cruddy state of the job market, discouraging prospects for graduates and exorbitant university fees. Instead, World of WarCraft is to blame. Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft has something of a rep for being addictive, with nerdy fans spending hours in rain, hail and snow just to buy a copy of the Lich King that they could very well have just ordered online. Even South Park managed to fill two whole episodes with the subject, when Guitar Hero only achieved one. But according to FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate, the game is not just a fun distraction, but represents a dire threat to the education of an entire generation, and only she can undertake a quest singlehandedly to stop it. How to Fix GTA IV Crashes And Freezings On PC?

:ayokona:One of the most anticipated PC games of the year, Grand Theft Auto IV did not have a great start: except from the fact that those who opted for digital distribution had no pre-loading options, it appears that those who managed to install the game are constantly suffering from GTA IV crashes, freezings and other performance related issues. Is there a way to fix these problems? For the moment, Rockstar remain silent – it’s probably still early and they have to analyze the tons of reports regarding poor performance and lock-ups. However, one thing is clear: there are many people having problems and we only have one possible suggestion right now for trying to fix the game: try defragging your hard disk drive after installing GTA IV. It might be a long shot, but it’s worth trying, since a heavily defragged game (and with a 15GB install, Rockstar’s title can do that) can lead to crashes, freezings and other problems.

An Offer You Can't Refuse!

:woooh:We got a pretty little package in the virtual mail today. No, it wasn't a fish wrapped in a bullet proof fish (though, hey, we don't mind the odd sleep with a fish), but rather eight new screens from The Godfather 2. EA Redwood is developing the sequel, and it's already looking like a mighty improvement on the first, which was a bit of sleeper hit in some quarters, and reviled as the work of the devil in others. The new game follows - very roughly - the plot and action of the second Godfather film, and even features some actors whor... we mean, reprising their roles from both films and the first game. Only One In Five Video Games Make A Decent Profit

:siga:Strangely enough, the data only really garnered much attention thanks to being completely misquoted by Forbes. The site ran an article using EEDAR’s data stating that only four per cent of games ever turned a profit, when what the data actually said was that only four per cent of all games that ever entered into production make a profit. This is significant because the majority of games which go into development, don’t actually come out the other side and never actually make it to the shelves in the first place. Of the games that do actually make it through to production, however, an astoundingly low 20 per cent of them actually make a "significant profit".

Want To Keep Playing Hellgate: London?

:woooh:Sadly, with the collapse of Flagship Studios earlier this year, this also means that they have no money to continue running the servers for Hellgate: London. Another company has stepped up to the plate (albeit temporarily) to keep the servers running in the interim - but this is only short lived. Indeed, on the 31st of January next year, the official servers for the game will be taken offline. Sure, you'll still be able to play in single player mode, but we all know that the real meat of the game resides firmly in the interwebs. ( www.atomicmpc.com.au )

WoW Whore Has 36 Accounts, Raids by Himself

:ahaha:Ripten : In what is perhaps the most shining example of obsession and geekiness I have ever seen, a fella by the name of Bradster has 36 World of WarCraft accounts that he plays on 11 computers simultaneously. He mainly seems to be doing it because he doesn’t like to rely on so many other people to get a raid going, which includes attacking the Alliance capital cities, and on that front I can totally see where he’s coming from. New StarCraft 2 News

:bringiton:Blizzard game developers announced today that the next installment of StarCraft will be released as three separate campaigns. This announcement was made at the StarCraft II Gameplay panel at Blizzcon, which included Rob Pardo and Dustin Browder. Each campaign will focus on one of the established playable races: Terran, Zerg or Protoss. The three campaigns will all follow the original mission format of the first StarCraft, with some new additions to the gameplay - mainly story mode. The first of the campaigns is Terran, titled Wings of Liberty. In this campaign players will play as Jim Raynor, rather than an anonymous human character. Developers also announced at the panel that the game will also feature a lot of in-game cinematics, new characters and the new story mode, which will carry through all of the new campaigns.
